simple equations

A and B start at noon from two towns 60 km apart, A's rate of walking is twice that of B's. If they walk 5 hours before they meet, find their rate of walking.

answer:
A = 8 km/hr, B = 4 km/hr

simple equation

If P and Q represent two towns 48 kms apart, and if A is walking from P to Q at 7 km/hr while B walks from Q to P at 5 km/hr, both starting at 9:00 am, at what time will they be 12 km apart?

Simple Equation

simple equations

Three friends returning from a movie, stopped to eat at a restaurant. After the dinner, they paid their bill and noticed a bowl of mints at the front counter. Shikha took 1/3rd of the mints, but returned four because she had a momentary pang of guilt. Farah then took ¼ of what was remaining but returned three for similar reasons. Aditi then took half of the remaining but threw back two into the bowl. The bowl had only 17 mints left when the raid was over. How many mints were originally in the bowl?

STD VI word problems in simple equation

  • Divide Rs 24 between A,B and C so that A may have 5 times, B 6 times as much as C.

  • Divide Rs 3.50 between A and B so that B may have 4 paise for every paisa that A has.

        (1 Rs = 100 paisa)

  • Divide Rs 2.25 between A, B and C so that A and C may each have 7 times as much as B

  • Divide Rs 48 in wages for a man, a women and a boy on the supposition that the man gets 4 times as much as the boy, and the women 3.
  •  A man is 4 times as old as his daughter and the difference between their ages is 36 years. Find their ages.
  • Divide Rs 42 between a man and a women so that the man may have Rs 4 to every Rs3 that the women has.
  •  A man is twice as old as his son and 10 times as old as his grandson. their combined ages add up to 96 years; how old are they.
  • A father is 9 times as old as his son and 3 times as old as his daughter and their combined ages amount to 65 years; find them.

STD. VI -- exercise on word problems in simple equation

There are two numbers, one of which is 7 times as great as the other, if the sum of the numbers is 96, then find the numbers?

Divide 70 into two parts so that one may be four times the other.

One number is 16 times as great as another, and their difference is 75, find them.

Find two numbers differing by 57 so that one of them is 20 times the other.

Find two numbers whose sum is 52, such that one of them is one twelfth of the other.

Find two numbers differing by 88 so that one of them is one ninth of the other.

Find the sum of three numbers whose sum is 56, such that the second number is twice the first number and the third number equals to four times the first.

Divide 84 into three parts, such that two of the parts are equal and the third part is five times as great as either of the equal parts.

Having thought of a number I multiplied it successively by 4, 5 and 8 and added the result. I then subtract the double of the number thought of and find that the result comes to 45. What number did I think of?

simple equation

A's age is equal to the sum of the ages of B and C. Ten years ago A was twice as old as B. Show that 10 years hence A will be twice as old as C.

simple equations

A man's age is 3 times the sum of the ages of his two sons, one of whom is twice as old as the other; in 12 years the sum of the son's ages will be three fourth of their father's age. Find the age of the father.

simple equation

A is 12 years older than B; 12 years ago he was twice as old as B then was. How old is A now?

simple equation

In 17  years a father will be twice as old as his son, whose age at the present time is one third of his father age. How old is his father now?
