percentage

A person split his property amongst his three sons. The youngest one got 50% of the entire property, the second got $10,000. The eldest got 20% less than the youngest. How much did the eldest son get?

Answer:
Let the value of property be $100.
So, youngest son got = 0.5 x $100 = $50
The eldest got = 0.8 x $50 = $40
Therefore the second son got = $ (100 –(50 + 40) ) = $10

The second son got $10 on base of $100
So, he got $10,000 on a base of = (100/10) x $10,000 = $100,000
So, the eldest son got = (40/100) x $100,000 = $40,000
