MTSE STD V ratio proportion question and answer

The sum of ages of the son and mother is in the ratio of 2: 14. When the son was born the mother was 24 years old. What is the age of mother and son?

MTSE STD V

Answer:

Since simultaneous equation is not taught in std. V, let us find a different way of doing this some.

Given,  S/M = 2/14

or, S/2 = M/14 = K say

So, S = 2K and M = 14K  ----------------(1)

Also given M - S = 24

or 14K - 2K = 24 -------------- (2) substituting (1) in (2)

12K = 24

or K = 2

So, S = 2x2 = 4 yrs, and M = 14 x 2 = 28 years

Method 2

let sum of mother and son's age be "a"

So, son's age = (2/16) a

and mother's age = (14/16) a

 (14/16) a - (2/16) a = (12/16) a = 24 ,  given

or a = 24 x 16 / 12 = 32

so, mother's age = (14/16) x 32 = 28
and son's age = (2/16) x 32 = 4
